It was down in the meadow when pearly with dew I saw a young maiden pick violets blue And the song that she sang made all the grove to ring Oh Billy's gone from me to fight for the King And I wish that the wars were all over Crying oh that the wars were all over The notes that she sang were the nightingale's own To the lark and the linnet, her song was well-known They tell us of victory, say soon we'll rejoice But I wait and I wait to hear my billy's voice And I wish that the wars were all over Crying oh that the wars were all over I said my dear maiden would you stay with me And we could live happy, and we could live free Oh no she said to me, none can stand in his stead I'll follow my Billy whether living or dead… It's now from my parents I'll haste and away To deck myself out in a young man's array I'll seek for my Billy or where he does lie So free for his sake I will venture my life... And I wish that the wars were all over Crying oh that the wars were all over

I’ll make my love a garland - it shall be dressed so fine I’ll deck it all with roses, and lilies mixed with thyme And I’ll present it to my love, when he returns from sea For I love my love, and I love my love, because my love loves me I wish I were a sparrow - I’d ascend into the air I’d hunt him like an arrow – and if he were not there I quickly would become a fish and search the raging sea For I love my love, and I love my love, because my love loves me I wish I were a reaper - I’d seek him in the corn And if I were a hunter, I’d hunt him with my horn I’d sound a blast when found at last, beneath the greenwood tree For I love my love, and I love my love, because my love loves me Sylvie Sylvie when no-one could see Dressed in men’s clothing and gear so free With sword and pistol all by her side To meet her true love, To meet her true love, Sylvie did ride As she went riding over the plain She met her true love and bid him stand Stand and deliver sir she said Or else this moment, Or else this moment, I’ll shoot you dead Oh when she’d robbed him of his store She said kind sir there’s one thing more A diamond ring which I know you wear Deliver it, Deliver it and your life I’ll spare My diamond ring a token is The ring I’ll save and my life I’ll give So tender hearted just like a dove She rode away, She rode away from her own true love Next morning in the garden green Just like two lovers they were seen Twas I that robbed you on the plain I’ve made you blush love, So here’s your watch love and gold again I only did it for to know Whether you was my true love or no But now I have a contented mind My heart and all dear, My heart and all dear, they are thine Sylvie Sylvie when no-one could see Dressed in men’s clothing and gear so free With sword and pistol all by her side To meet her true love, To meet her true love, Sylvie did ride

'Twas through Moorfields I rambled by myself and all alone I heard a maid in Bedlam a-making her sad moan She was wringing of her tender hands, and a-tearing of her hair Saying, " Oh, cruel parents, you have proved to me severe. She was wringing of her tender hands, and a-tearing of her hair Saying, " Oh, cruel parents, you have proved to me severe. It's all for my true love, your apprentice boy you know You sent him to the sea which has proved my overthrow This sad disconsolation has made me to complain Saying, ' Oh, will I ever see the man I love again? ' " Twas early next morning this young sailor came on shore, He walk’ed and he talk’ed down alongside Bedlam door He gave unto the porter a handsome sum of gold Saying, " Take me to my dear love, she's the joy of my soul." Saying, " Take me to my dear love, she's the joy of my soul." I am the young man that your father sent to sea But I have returned all for the love of thee If this is true, she said, then all my sorrows they are fled I’ll bid farewell these chains, and this cold strawy bed I am the young man that your father sent to sea But I have returned all for the love of thee If this is true, she said, then all my sorrows they are fled I’ll bid farewell these chains, and this cold strawy bed So it’s through Moorfields I ramble by myself and all alone Yes it’s through Moorfields I ramble, by myself and all alone

Lucy Wan 06:06
Fair Lucy she sits at her father’s door, weeping and making her moan Along then comes her brother dear, what ails thee Lucy wan? Oh I ail and I ail dear brother she cried, and I’ll tell you the reason why There is a child between my sides, that’s of you dear brother and I Then he’s drawn out his own broad sword, that hangs low down by his knee And he has cutteth off poor Lucy Wan’s head, and her fair body in three And outen then come her thick heart’s blood, and outen then come the thin And he is away to his mother’s house – What ails thee Geordie wan And what is that blood on the point of your sword – my son come tell unto me Oh that is the blood of my grey hound, she would not run with me Oh your grey hound’s blood was never so thick - my son come tell unto me Oh that is the blood of my grey mare, she would not ride with me Oh your grey mare’s blood it was never so red - my son come tell unto me Oh that’s not the blood of my grey mare – tis the blood of my sister Lucy Oh what will you do when your father comes to know - my son come tell unto me Oh I will set sail in a bottomless boat, and I will sail the sea And when will you return again, my son come tell unto me When sun and moon dance on yonder hill and that will never be

Come to my window my love oh my love Come to my window I pray For the hours so quickly pass, and the dew falls on the grass Dear love come before the dawning of the day Come to my window my love oh my love Come or my heart strings will break For the night is speeding by, soon will morning streak the sky And the world it will slowly come awake And the world it will slowly come awake Come to my window my love oh my love Come before the stars cease to shine For my heart is full of fears, and my voice is choked with tears I am thine, oh thou knowest, I am thine I am thine, oh thou knowest, I am thine (Humming) Believers, deceivers - Believers, deceivers - Believers, deceivers Down in yonder bower, There does grow a flower Do you recall the promises you made there Go to, false pretender, Do you not remember When my innocent heart you did ensnare Young men are deceivers, Young women are believers Young men are deceivers, Young women are believers Young men are false and seldom do prove true Had i my heart in keeping, Oh had i my poor heart again Had i my heart in keeping, Oh had i my poor heart again

As it fell out upon one day, rich Div'rous made a feast, And he invited all his friends, and gentry of the best. Then Lazarus laid him down and down, and down at Dives’ door: ‘Some meat, some drink, brother Diverous, bestow upon the poor.’ So arouse your songs of freedom the world seems upside down They scorn the poor man as a thief in Country & in Town ‘Thou art none of my brother, Lazarus, lying begging at my door; No meat nor drink will I give thee, nor bestow upon the poor.’ Then Lazarus laid him down and down and down at Dive’s wall: ‘Some meat, some drink, brother Diverous, or with hunger starve I shall.’ So arouse your songs of freedom the world seems upside down They scorn the poor man as a thief in Country & in Town ‘Thou art none of my brother, Lazarus, that lies begging at my wall; No meat nor drink will I give thee, but with hunger starve you shall.’ Then Lazarus laid him down and down, and down at Dive’s gate: ‘Some meat, some drink, brother Diverous, for mercy's own sweet sake.’ So arouse your songs of freedom the world seems upside down They scorn the poor man as a thief in Country & in Town So arouse your songs of freedom the world seems upside down They scorn the poor man as a thief in Country & in Town Alas, un-altered are the times, despised are those in need There’s hundreds who are starving for they can’t get food to eat And if they go unto the rich to ask them for relief They bang their door all in their face as if they were a thief So arouse your songs of freedom the world seems upside down They scorn the poor man as a thief in Country & in Town

I had a dream the other night I dreamed I was with my darling And when I woke, I found it not so And I started looking for her Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me I rode till I came to her father’s hall And there I enquired for her He answered me, there’s none such here And he’d set my heart on fire Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me I stood awhile all in a maze A viewing the lonely window My passion flew, my sword I drew But there's locks and bolts to hinder Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me The locks and bolts were knocked away And I caused the locks for to shatter Come all you who have sweethearts You must fight till you’ve gained their freedom Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me Oh that girl, oh that sweet girl, She rode on the railroad with me Come all you who have sweet hearts you must fight till you’ve gained their freedom

about

Folk and laptop duo Solarference's second album Locks & Bolts was recorded live with a warm and high-spirited audience at the Cube Cinema in Bristol, and captures the creative energy, spontaneity and intricacy of Solarference’s live show.

For this album, Nick Janaway & Sarah Owen have gathered and recomposed ten traditional songs, exploring stories of freedom and constraint, imprisonment and liberation. Songs of rescue or longing for rescue, songs that protest the social constrictions of poverty, work, war, the constraints of unhealthy relationships or family dynamics, with a theme through all the songs of celebration of freedom & emancipation.
